ESIC Faridabad resident doctors call off strike after assurances on grievance committee, medical care

Faridabad: The resident doctors at ESIC Medical College Hospital, Faridabad, have called off their strike after the authorities assured them of fulfilling their demands, including setting up a PG Grievance Committee to address and facilitate the resolution of issues and concerns related to the welfare, working conditions and other matters concerning PG Residents.

Further, the medical college has also agreed to bear the medical expenses of a resident doctor, who recently developed quadriparesis during duty.

The institute has also issued an Office Order stating that all PG students and Senior Residents are entitled to avail themselves of in-house medical treatment facilities, including medical consultation, examination, treatment, investigation, and other necessary medical care.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that resident doctors at ESIC MCH, Faridabad announced an indefinite strike after a postgraduate resident doctor from the General Surgery Department developed acute weakness that progressed to quadriparesis while on duty after allegedly working prolonged hours. It was alleged that the doctor was on OT duty after working approximately 40 of 48 hours, and there was a delay in providing emergency medical treatment.

Raising their grievances regarding the long duty hours and also highlighting the delay in providing emergency medical care to the medico, the resident doctors at the institute wrote to the Dean and also announced their decision to commence an indefinite strike.

When the resident doctors had first written to the Dean on 19.09.2026, demanding accountability and immediate action regarding negligence in the management of the concerned medico, the college had set up a Committee to inquire into the incident. On the same day, the committee submitted its findings and recommendations. Meetings were also held by the Dean, MS, and DMS with representatives of the Resident Doctors on 19.09.2026, and the resident doctors were informed that all their grievances would be addressed.

Later, when the resident doctors submitted another letter announcing their decision to launch an indefinite strike, a meeting was held between the Dean, MS and DMS with representatives of the Resident Doctors.

Consequently, the college administration issued an Office Order stating that all PG students and Senior Residents will be entitled to avail themselves of in-house medical treatment facilities. Medical treatment includes medical consultation, examination, treatment, investigation, and other necessary medical care.

Further, a Postgraduate Grievance Committee was set up, and the names of the Committee members were also discussed with the representatives of the Resident Doctors.

The institute also issued circulars clarifying the role and supervision of the Head of the Department, in addition to inter-departmental coordination, and also the work areas and details of the responsible officers related to the Hospital Control Room were specified.

Besides, a fresh circular was issued stating that the absentee statement, duly verified by the HoD, would be treated as final for disbursement of salary in case of mismatch in biometric details or mispunching. It was further clarified that, in case the HOD does not verify the attendance, the MS/Dean would verify the same so that Resident Doctors do not face any hurdles in salary disbursement. Further, a referral was generated in respect of the medico for cashless treatment at Amrita Hospital, where he is presently undergoing treatment.

The Dean, MS and DMS also personally met the Resident Doctors on strike and assured them that their issues had been addressed. They were also assured that any further issues would be addressed promptly. Later, the representatives of Senior Doctors of ESIC HQRS visited ESIC MCH, Faridabad, and after giving assurances to the resident doctors, they requested the students to immediately resume their duties in the interest of continuity of patient care. After getting assurances from the authorities, the resident doctors decided to call off their strike.
