Six arrested after doctor alleges molestation at Kolkata mall multiplex

Kolkata: In a shocking incident, a woman doctor was allegedly molested, while her husband and friends were assaulted at a movie theatre in a mall in Kolkata on Sunday evening. Police have arrested six persons based on the doctor's complaint. 

According to the complaint, the six accused allegedly harassed the group throughout the movie by making obscene and sexually suggestive comments and gestures. When the doctor and her companions objected to their behaviour, the accused allegedly assaulted them.

Theatre authorities intervened after the altercation and alerted the police. Officers reached the cinema hall shortly afterwards and attempted to speak with the accused.

Police sources said the men allegedly argued with the officers, used abusive language and behaved rudely with other moviegoers. 

Following the confrontation, the police brought all six men to the station. The police confirmed their identities through identification cards found on them. During interrogation, one of the accused allegedly claimed to be a student of Jadavpur University and threatened dire consequences if he were arrested, reports the Indian Express.

Police registered a case against the six accused under provisions relating to wrongful restraint, causing physical hurt, using words or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a woman, and using criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.

The complainant's husband also raised concerns over the arrangements at the multiplex, alleging that people were smoking inside the hall and that there was no security guard present.

Speaking to TOI, SibSagar Shaw, GM Facility, Acropolis said, “We are deeply concerned about the unfortunate incident that took place on Sunday inside the multiplex involving a doctor couple and a group of six individuals. Immediately upon being informed of the incident, the mall authorities informed Kasba Police. We strongly condemn any form of violence or unruly behaviour on our premises. The safety and security of our patrons remain our highest priority.”

The six accused were subsequently produced before a court, where police sought their custody. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
