Ahmedabad: The Cardiologist from Khyati Hospital, who was recently arrested for performing unnecessary angioplasty procedures on two PMJAY beneficiaries, has now been suspended for three years by the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC).

In its suspension order, the GMC mentioned that it had taken suo motu cognizance of the incident in addition to a request from the Medical Services division of the Gujarat Health Department, Indian Express has reported.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that two doctors from Khyati Hospital in Bodakev were booked for allegedly performing an angioplasty procedure on two PMJAY beneficiaries without taking their family's consent. Ultimately, the patients died and later, the city police arrested the cardiologist involved in the matter. The other doctor was facing similar charges and was reportedly linked to hospitals on Rajkot and Surat.

Owners and doctors of Khyati Multispeciality Hospital were booked for culpable homicide, attempted culpable homicide, forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy for allegedly performing unnecessary angioplasty surgeries on the two patients, who later died due to alleged negligence in post-operative care.

The inquiry committee constituted by the State government in their preliminary probe found that the deceased did not require the heart procedure. “Upon examining the case of the deceased patient Maheshbhai Barot, it was found that he had no valid medical reason for undergoing angiography or angioplasty," revealed the report.

As per the latest media report by Indian Express, now suspending the cardiologist for three years, the Gujarat Medical Council mentioned in its order that it took into account the report by the Expert Medical Committee and had also heard the reply of the concerned Cardiologist's father.

According to GMC's order, all the medical registrations of the doctor, including his MBBS degree and the MD Degree in General Medicine, DNB in General Medicine, DNB in Cardiology, would be removed from the register of medical practitioners for a period of three years, based on the resolution passed by the Executive Committee and General Body of the Council.

The Cardiologist, who was arrested on November 13 and currently is in judicial custody, is facing charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt at culpable homicide, and several other sections of the law in three FIRs filed in this case — one on behalf of the state government and two filed by the families of the deceased persons.

Last month, taking action against two doctors from Rajkot and Ahmedabad, GMC had barred them from practice for one year and six months respectively. One of these doctors, who hails from Rajkot, was found guilty of committing fraud in the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme. He allegedly made false claims related to the PMJAY scheme.
