New Delhi: In a gruesome incident that left residents of Delhi's Jangpura in shock, a 63-year-old general physician was allegedly murdered by four men who broke into his house, tied his hands and feet up, and strangled him to death.

The doctor’s body was discovered by his wife who was away when the intruders broke into their house, situated in a relatively quiet area and committed the heinous act. The intruders also locked the doctor's two dogs in the bathroom.

The deceased, identified as Dr Yogesh Chander Paul had a private clinic in the Delhi's Jangpura area.

According to the police, he was found dead on the kitchen floor with his hands and feet tied up. Preliminary reports suggest that there were visible signs of strangulation on his neck and indications of physical assault on his face.

The involvement of the four men in the murder case was shown in the CCTV camera installed outside the building. It showed the men entering the building, particularly the doctor's house at 1.30 pm.

Police have suspected it to be a case of robbery as the house was ransacked, a senior officer said. However, it is unclear how much the robbers lotted from the house.

As per a PTI report, a PCR call was received at about 6.50 PM. Local police which responded to the call reached the spot with a forensic team along with a dog squad. They found Dr Chander Paul, the victim, in the kitchen of his house. “His hands were tied and suspected to be smothered to death.” said the officer.

During the time of the incident, the doctor was alone at home after returning from his private clinic which is 10 minutes walking distance from his house. His wife Dr Neela Paul is the first person to discover the doctor's dead body in the house. She is also a doctor in the Delhi government hospital.

“There are also signs of robbery as rooms have been ransacked. Prima facie, it appears that the accused persons robbed the house and brought fatality to Dr. Paul,” another police officer said.

Kapil Kakkar, President of Jangpura Extension RWA, told The Indian Express, “Dr Paul was a jovial person and we even awarded him the society ‘best resident of the year’ award recently… he was born and brought up here and had been treating patients ever since I can remember… he was quite famous as a doctor in the nearby areas.”

“He used to leave for his clinic at 10 am and come home for lunch at 1 pm. He would then return to the clinic at 5 pm and come back around 10 pm,” said a neighbour.

An officer told the Daily, “It appears that the accused persons carried out a recce of the house and might have come posing as patients as Dr Paul used to consult at his house too.”

The police have registered a case and an investigation is underway to nab the accused men.
