Noida: Prayer lamp sets Doctor's Bungalow ablaze, over dozen people rescued

Noida: A lamp lit for prayer has set a doctor's bungalow ablaze in Noida with over a dozen people, including children trapped in the building, officials said. 

The trapped people were rescued by the firefighters and no casualties were reported, they said. The fire was controlled in around an hour, they said.

"Around 10 am, we go an emergency call about a fire in the D block of Sector 20 after which firefighters and three water tenders were rushed to the spot," Chief Fire Officer Arun Kumar Singh said.

The doctor had organized a prayer and a lamp triggered the fire on the first floor of the bungalow where 13 people, including children, were trapped, Singh said. There was polyvinyl chloride (PVC) panelling inside the bungalow which led to a lot of smoke and intense flames, the chief fire officer said. The fire was brought under control in an hour and the firefighters had to use special apparatus for the rescue operation, Chief Fire Officer Arun Kumar Singh said.  

The fire had also spread to the second floor of the bungalow. The officers said that the billowing smoke, flames, and high temperature inside the building had made it impossible for the firefighters to reach the upper areas, reports the Millennium Post. 

Singh said, "It seemed impossible. But the firefighters showed indomitable courage and by wearing breathing apparatus passed through the thick smoke and heat without caring for their lives." He added, "A total of 13 people, trapped on the first and second floor, were rescued safely through the roof." Further, the chief fire officer said that the doctor, his wife, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, and his staffers were among those who were rescued. 

Singh said, "During the rescue operations, two firefighters — leading fireman Mahipal Singh and fireman Nizamuddin — received injuries and were hospitalized as their health deteriorated due to smoke and heat," adding, "Joint Commissioner of Police Love Kumar reached the Apollo Hospital and wished for their speedy recovery. Police Commissioner Alok Singh also checked on the health of the injured personnel and appreciated their courage."

Rs 50,000 was announced as a reward by the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Alok Singh for the team engaged in rescue and relief operations. The police, in a statement, stated that the commissioner also announced recommending their names for the DG Award for their bravery.
