Radiologist's viral post on alleged Rs 50 crore dowry demand sparks online debate

Hyderabad: Following a viral social media post by a woman radiologist describing the alleged dowry demands she faced while searching for a life partner, a fresh debate has emerged over the continued prevalence of the dowry system in India.  

According to the news reports, in her widely circulated message, the doctor introduced herself as a qualified radiologist with an MD in Radiodiagnosis. She said she is the eldest of three daughters and is financially independent, capable of supporting herself and her family.

Despite her academic and professional achievements, she claimed that her marriage search had become emotionally draining due to repeated dowry expectations from prospective grooms’ families. "The situations which I came across during this process is really tough," she wrote. 

In the post, the radiologist alleged that one prospective family demanded dowry worth Rs 50 crore, while another reportedly asked for 10 percent of her property under the local custom of “aadapaduchu katnam,” citing that the groom’s brother was also a doctor.

She further stated that such expectations had placed significant emotional pressure on her parents, who were assisting her in the marriage search. Despite this, she said her family had refused to force her into such alliances. 

Concluding her post on a reflective note, the radiologist asked, "Can't we really eradicate the dowry system?"  

The post has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread reactions. While many users expressed shock and supported her stand, others debated issues around financial expectations in modern marriages.

According to Money Control, one user wrote, "That 50 cr demanding person must be a doctor only. There are umpteen number of engineers out there who can marry her without any dowry. Maybe in millions out there. They must be searching for doctors and that too with some MD tag." Another person said, "She should try to get married to someone earning equally or lower than her if she doesn't want to pay dowry. Dowry will only increase because alimony has increased."
