Guwahati: Dr Shanti Medhi, a distinguished gynaecologist, passed away at her residence in Hengrabari, Guwahati, on the night of October 5. She was 80.

The wife of the late Colonel Dr Mahananda Medhi, Dr Shanti Medhi had reportedly been suffering from several age-related ailments in recent days.

Dr Shanti Medhi is a brilliant academic who completed her MBBS from Gauhati Medical College, securing the highest marks in her batch. She subsequently pursued her MD at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, one of the country’s premier health institutions.  

She further obtained the MRCOG qualification from London, establishing herself as a highly trained specialist in gynaecology.  

Dr Medhi began her medical career at Assam Medical College and subsequently served at Silchar Medical College. She later moved abroad for professional assignments and worked in Dubai, Muscat and Bahrain.

During her overseas career, she reportedly earned recognition for her professional services and continued to contribute to the medical field before eventually retiring after a long and distinguished career.

Dr Medhi’s son is currently based in Boston, United States; he arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday. Family members and admirers said that the last rites of Dr Shanti Medhi will be performed at the Navagraha Crematorium in Guwahati on Wednesday morning, reports Pratidin Time.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Eminent cardiologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr Mani Chhetri passed away late on Sunday at his residence at the age of 106. According to family sources, Dr Chhetri had suffered a head injury after a fall about a fortnight ago and had largely been bedridden since returning home from the hospital. “He had shown signs of recovery after being discharged.
