Kozhikode: Former professor at Kozhikode Medical College and well-known Urologist Dr. Roy Chally breathed his last at the age of 85 at his residence on Monday. He was the first person to perform renal transplant surgery in Kozhikode Medical College.

As everyone in the medical field is mourning the loss, former professor and Head of the Department of Urology, Felix Cardoza, remembered Dr. Roy with the few words on the surgery he performed, "The surgery was conducted at the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, in 1986 where Dr. Chally was working then. That was a time when such surgeries were performed only in big hospitals in major cities outside the State".

Dr. Chally was a resident of Mulanthuruthy in Ernakulam district.

The body of Dr. Chally was kept at the Patteri Chally house till noon and Baby Memorial Hospital between 12-1 pm for public homage. Later it was taken to Mulanthuruthy and laid to rest at 10 am morning at the Orthodox Church cemetery.

The Hindu reports that he is survived by his wife Anny Chally and sons Poulose Chally and Mammen Chally and children-in-law Anna Challyand Preetha Chally.

Background

Dr. Chally studied MBBS and MS (Surgery) at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, and MCh (Urology) at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

He served several patients from poor families who used to look forward to him as he was a byword for renal treatment in the region. Leaving behind hundreds of students his death is a shock to those students as well who are currently working in various capacities in hospitals across the globe.

After his retirement from the Kozhikode MCH as Professor and Head of the Department of Urology, he joined Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH) as the head of the urology department.
