Renowned cardiac surgeon Prakash Marpakwar passes away
Pune: Noted cardiac surgeon Dr. Prakash Marpakwar died here on Saturday following a brief illness, family sources said. Marpakwar, 73, is survived by two daughters.

In a long medical career, he had several firsts to his name. He was the first doctor to perform open-heart surgery in Nagpur in 1987. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis condoled Dr. Marpakwar's death, saying that the Vidarbha region has lost a prominent surgeon.
Dr. Marpakwar was the son of freedom fighters late Chintamanrao and Saraswati. He was the brother of advocate Prabhakar and journalist Prafulla and father of two daughters Amruta and Smita. Dr. Marpakwar was a noted cardiac surgeon who had carried out many medical procedures and had several firsts to his name. He was the first doctor to perform open-heart surgery in Nagpur in 1987.

In 1977, he was a short trainee at the PGI, Chandigarh, after which he worked in the department of thoracic surgery from 1978 to 1981 at Seth GS Medical College and KEM(King Edward Memorial) Hospital in Mumbai.
Dr. Marpakwar was a member of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons Association of India and a member of the Association of Surgeons of India. the doctor was the vice-president of the National Society for Prevention of Heart Diseases and Rehabilitation in Nagpur. He was also a member of the Cardiology Society of India and the Indian Medical Association.
Later he started a private practice and worked as an honorary doctor at the ESIS Hospital, Nagpur. He practiced in several countries in Africa including Ethiopia and Libya. He also presented papers in Angiology at Munich.
