Nair Hospital anesthetist allegedly commits suicide in hostel room
Mumbai: A 27-year-old anesthetist working with BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central allegedly committed suicide by injecting himself with an unknown substance in his hostel room on Monday night.
A vial of injection was found from his room, however, no suicide note or similar evidence was spotted. Thus, the reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained.
The deceased has been identified as a first-year student of anaesthesiology attached to the civic-run hospital.
According to the police officials, on February 15, the doctor was on rounds in the wards at the Nair hospital and returned to his room in the hostel saying they can call him whenever needed. However, he did not answer several calls that were made to him from the hospital. Thereafter, a person went to the hostel room and found that it was locked from inside. Subsequently, the door was broken and the doctor was found unconscious in his hostel room around 10.30 pm on Monday.
He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on admission, the official said.
According to the police, the deceased had allegedly injected himself with an unknown substance. The officer told TOI that they found a vial from the room. He had taken an injection in both hands.
"We did not find any suicide note. We searched his hostel room and found his phone but its PIN locked. We will now call an expert to open the phone and examine it," added the officer.
As per a recent media report by the Times of India, the anesthetist's brother is also a doctor attached to a city hospital. He informed the daily that he had no complaints. The anesthesiologists had last week visited his ailing father in Aurangabad and returned to Mumbai on February 14.
"After coming to the city, he had spoken to his brother as well and was normal," the officer said.
Meanwhile, a case of accidental death has been registered at Agripada police station, he said, adding that the victim's body was sent for post-mortem. The post mortem was carried out at the Nair hospital and the body was handed over to the family at around 10 am on Tuesday. They took the body to their hometown, Aurangabad.
Prima facie, the police suspect that the doctor took the extreme step due to personal problems, the official told PTI.
