Kota: A 25-year-old woman died at Kota’s JK Lon Hospital on Tuesday, a day after giving birth to twin babies, marking the second maternal death at the hospital within two days.

The woman, a resident of the Kaithun area, underwent a Caesarean section to deliver twins at around 6 pm on Monday. She died several hours later after developing severe complications believed by doctors to be linked to postpartum eclampsia.

According to JK Lon Hospital Superintendent Dr Nirmala Sharma, the woman’s blood pressure had reportedly been normal during the earlier months of pregnancy but had risen significantly by the time she reached the hospital. Medical records showed that she had been prescribed medication for high blood pressure from the seventh month of pregnancy, although, according to the hospital administration, she was unaware of the prescription.

The woman had previously undergone a Caesarean delivery. During her latest pregnancy, pre-operative blood tests reportedly showed abnormalities associated with high blood pressure, including indicators of impaired liver and kidney function.

Following the birth of her twins, the woman was reportedly conscious and spoke normally with her family members on Monday night. However, at around 3:30 am on Tuesday, her condition suddenly deteriorated. She experienced two episodes of vomiting, followed by severe anxiety, rapid breathing, violent jerking and tongue-biting.

Speaking to TOI, Dr Sharma said the patient suffered from postpartum eclampsia. During the seizures, vomit entered her lungs, causing a steep drop in blood oxygen saturation from 86% to 62%, along with a fall in blood pressure. “We administered necessary medications and summoned specialists. However, despite all efforts, we could not save her,“ said Dr Sharma.

Meanwhile, her husband has alleged that her condition began deteriorating after she was administered a fluid.

The death comes just a day after a 34-year-old woman died following delivery at JK Lon Hospital on Monday, making her the second reported maternal death at the facility within two days.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that allegations of medical negligence have surfaced following the death of a 25-year-old pregnant woman within hours of normal delivery after developing medical complications at Bundi District Government Hospital on Sunday morning.
