Karnataka district hospitals to get Daycare Chemotherapy Centres

Belagavi: In a move aimed at improving access to cancer care across Karnataka, the State government has decided to establish daycare chemotherapy centres in all district hospitals, Medical Education Minister Dr Sharanaprakash Patil informed the Council on Monday. 

According to the news reports, replying to a question raised by MLC Kushalappa MP, Dr Patil said the initiative aims to decentralise cancer treatment and ease the burden on the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru. In collaboration with Kidwai Memorial Institute, the government has initiated steps to establish cancer centres in several districts.

Providing details of cancer treatment at Kidwai, Dr. Patil said that over the past three years, 41,512 cancer patients have received treatment at the institute. Treatment included surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these, depending on the type and stage of cancer, reports Vartha Bharati
.

Between 2022 and 2024, 12,781 patients underwent surgery, 14,423 received radiation therapy, and over 28,370 were administered chemotherapy. Additionally, more than 110 patients received bone marrow transplants free of cost, Dr Patil added.

Dr Patil also mentioned that the Peripheral Cancer Centre at Kalaburagi, which was established in 1990, is currently being upgraded. Administrative approval for the project has already been granted, and civil works are underway. In addition, administrative sanction has been accorded for the establishment of regional cancer centres in Mysuru, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, and Belagavi.

Similar approvals have been provided to establish cancer centres within the Super Speciality Hospital premises in Raichur and the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences.

As per news reports by TNIE, Patil said cancer treatment facilities are already functional at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Ballari Medical College and Research Centre, and Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubballi. Steps are also underway to commence cancer treatment services shortly at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences and the Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences.
