Mangaluru-based medical college owner threatened by cops to return Rs 1 crore taken for MBBS seat
Kottayam: An action has been taken against an officer of Kottayam police station for allegedly helping a businessman in threatening a medical college owner to return the bribe money that the businessman had paid to buy off an MBBS seat for his son.
The incident which took place years ago reports that the Kottayam police were involved in an unofficial pursuit in a case registered at Kottayam East station by a businessman who has alleged connections with a politician in Puthuppally.
The businessman had allegedly paid Rs 1 crore to a Mangaluru-based medical college agent to buy off a medical seat for his son. However, later the businessman wanted his money back, and eventually approached the doctor who ran the institution with a copy of the FIR registered in Kottayam based on the businessman's complaint, reports the Mathrubhumi.
The college owner stated that they could not immediately pay back the money. The businessman had reportedly influenced the police officials by offering them a commission if they could cooperate. The former knew that it was impossible to get the money through the legal route as he would not be able to substantiate the source of Rs 1 crore.
After that, the police team visited the medical college in Mangaluru and reportedly dragged the college owner to the vehicle of the businessman and was brought to Kottayam.
The college owner was intimidated to pay an amount of Rs 1 crore and his family members bought the money to Kottayam. The money was also handed over in the presence of police, following which the college owner was released. The police officials also received a commission amount of Rs 25 lakh from the businessman after the incident.
However, the intelligence wing investigated the matter after the incident came to light. The allegations were found true to some extent by the department, following which a department-level action was taken against an official. However, no action has been reported against any other persons.
