2 MBBS students of Silchar Medical College allegedly assaulted by CISF official

Assam: In a shocking incident, two final year MBBS students of Silchar Medical College and Hospital were allegedly beaten and abused by a CISF official on 29th June.

According to the recent media reports, the students were going to run some errands at noon and they requested the officials to allow them to use the sub road which has been sealed; however, instead of letting them pass through the path, the official allegedly assaulted the medicos.

After this, the Student's Union of SMCH raised their voice and demanded justice for the two students considering which action was assured against the accused.

One of the MBBS students told Barak Bulletin, "At a road near the hostel when I requested to let us go he started abusing us and then he asked us to call the in-charge of Ghungoor Police outpost and said he would only allow us to go if the in-charge says so". He further added that even before he can show the identity card or call the in charge, the CISF official started manhandling them and abusing them.

It is reported that after being beaten, the students went to their hostel to attend their wounds but the police allegedly reached the hostel to take their statements as the CISF official has complained against them for creating 'ruckus'. In such a situation, the students approached the principal of SMCH and elaborated the matter to him.

After getting the information about the incident and finding the approach of the CISF official to be unjust, the principal asked the official to apologize; however, he did not apologize, instead, he misbehaved with the authority.

Commenting on the incident, the Silchar Medical College Students' Union said, "The doctors were just stating that they are students and before they could call the in charge or show their identity cards, the CISF and police personnel started their Lathi charge. Be it, anyone, not even a medical student is this the way, do you beat every person on the streets even before hearing about what they are there for".

The Students Union of SMCH described the matter on social media and stated "we demand an apology and the confirmation that we would not be ever beaten up like this, even after that we were rejected for a simple apology and a bit of safety. Now we demand justice and strict action against the CISF and police personnel on duty." At a time like this when all the health workers and medicos are offering their services day and night to handle the pandemic, this kind of behaviour has enraged the medical community, saying this the students union took to Facebook and made the attached post.

However, according to Cachar SP Superintendent of Police Manabendra, the path through which the boys were travelling were sealed, "They had no business using that path to travel to the boy's hostel". He added "both of the students were spotted using this path on several occasions and despite asking them not to, they continue to do so. Today the CISF official manning the barricade stopped them and asked them to use the main road and not this sealed alternative one. They did not agree and started arguing with the official following which the official charged on them".

The principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Babul Bezbaruah denounced this action of the officials and stated "whatever the reason might be the CISF official cannot take law in his hand and beat the students in this manner. if the student did something wrong, the CISF official could have complained to me and I would have taken the necessary actions. He reported to OC and before beating students he should have consulted the OC." After listening to the principal and the Union the SP has assured them that strict action will be taken against the CISF  personal involved in the incident including proper safety of all the doctors and students residing in the SMCH campus.

They were assured permanent closure of the permanent route connecting SMCH campus to Uttarkrishnapur part 3, construction of a full-fledged police station inside the SMCH inside the campus with the necessary personnel and resources, till then separate police force will be provided.
