Gujarat: Doctor Couple Charred to Death in road accident, accused absconding

Following the collision with the dumper near Lihoda village on the Bayad-Dahegam road in Dahegam taluka of Aravalli district, the car had caught fire and due to the failure of the centralized lock system, the doctor duo couldn't get out. By the time the fire department team had arrived for rescue, the couple had been charred to death.

Following the accident, the driver of the dumper had escaped the spot. A case has been registered against the accused under IPC sections 304A for causing death by negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide and 279 for rash driving.

The deceased doctors have been identified as a doctor couple, both gynecologists. The couple is survived by their son, a Maninagar-based gynecologist, and a daughter also a doctor.

As per the latest media report by the Indian Express, the couple had been in Maninagar on Saturday to visit their son. They had left the place around 3 pm as they wanted to reach their home to cast vote for the local body polls. On their way back home in their Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, the accident had happened around 4 pm in the afternoon.

Speaking about the incident, a police officer at Rakhiyal police station told Indian Express, "The car was hit by the dumper vehicle, puncturing its diesel tank, resulting in fire. The automatic central lock of the vehicle also malfunctioned as the couple tried to open. A fire department team responded to a distress call by a few passersby and the fire was doused by 4.30 pm. By then, the couple was dead."

Sub-inspector A J Shah of Rakhial police in Gandhinagar has further informed the Times of India that the impact of the accident had been so powerful that the engine of the car had flown onto the road. The Truck had turned turtle and had fallen into a roadside pit.

"Due to the impact of the accident, the car doors got locked. Fuel and the heat generated by the accident sparked a major fire in the car," added Shah to the daily.

Shah further mentioned, "The bodies were charred to such an extent that it was next to impossible to identify them," said Shah. "As we found the number plate of the car, we ascertained the victims' identities and called their son who identified his mother by the chain she wore."

TOI adds that a team of forensic had been called into the spot and the report would be available by Monday.

Although the accused had been on the run, the Police have been investigating the case. A Police Officer has informed Indian Express, "We have got the dumper's vehicle number but there is no CCTV footage. Further investigation is on."
