Kin vandalizes Ahmedabad hospital after death of COVID patient, booked

Dr. Sandeep Dwivedi told The Indian Express that the patient was in a stable condition at the time of admission with the higher cycle threshold value. The patient had a D-dimer value of 268 nanograms per milliliter on November 23rd which then increased to 5070 ng/ml on November 27. Throughout, the patient had a fever.

The doctor also informed that " on Tuesday morning, the patient further developed left eye swelling where after our visiting neurologist asked the family members to get a CT scan done." At the same time, the facility informed the family members to shift them to a tertiary care hospital as the hospital lacked some in-house diagnostic facilities of imaging, scans.

According to the daily, the doctors stated that the family members as well as the hospital were trying to contact other hospitals to see if it is a bed vacancy. The patient also requested that an RT-PCR be done so that if he is negative, he can then try to seek admission in Non-COVID tertiary hospitals. However after the scan is conducted on the patient, the doctors found acute fungal infection developed in the eye and thrombosis that is a blood clot in the brain after analyzing the reports the neurologist informed the relatives of the patient regarding the complications and also mentioned that these are life-threatening and have 100% mortality rate.

After that, the patient was shifted to Oxygen and subsequently have to be incubated but despite the best efforts of the doctor, the patient could not be saved and he passed away at 9 p.m. As per the daily, when the relatives of the patient received the news of the demise of the patient, they resorted to violence and started vandalizing Hospital property. One of the doctors stated that they ransacked the hospital including breaking the glass panes of the pharmacy, the owner's chamber, and the storage room. The hospital also informed that there was a bill of around 2 lakhs but only 25000 deposit was paid by the patient's family.

In order to stop the relatives from creating violence in the premise any further, the hospital authority informed the police who intervened and handled the whole situation. At around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the police asked the patient to leave the premises after assuring them that they will be lodging a complaint of medical negligence against the hospital. Following the incident, the hospital owner registered a case of violence against the relatives. The relatives of the patient have been booked under the charges of unlawful assembly, rioting, trespassing, obscene language, mischief causing damage to the property under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Court, the Gujarat police act, and Epidemic Diseases Act, reports the daily.

However, no arrest has been made yet, on the other hand, the police have also registered a case of accidental death. He has also secured the postmortem report of the dead body by a panel of doctors to find out the exact reason behind his death.
