MD seat racket at Sion hospital: Police uncovers modus operandi
Mumbai: In the latest development, Police have uncovered about the modus operandi of the MD seat racket in connection with the Sion Hospital.
This came after the police came to know involvement of two middlemen in the medical seat racket of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and Medical College, better known as Sion Hospital. This update comes two weeks after the arrest of the assistant dean of the hospital. Police have learnt that the middlemen used to act as a link between the dean and the students.
Our team of Medical Dialogues earlier reported the case where the Assistant Dean had been arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of rupees 50 lakh from an MBBS graduate and duping her on the pretext of granting her PG medical admission to the MD Paediatrics course.
According to the police report, the 28-year-old MBBS a female doctor came in touch with a man in August who claimed that he could help her in getting admission for a post-graduation course from the Government quota and also stated that seats were available in Sion hospital.

As per the latest media report by the IndianExpress, the Police have learnt that the middlemen were from Navi Mumbai. They used to approach the students and try to lure them with promises of admission at the Sion Hospital.
The report adds that Police have been approached by four aspiring PG students so far. Those four students had been duped of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 37 lakh, Rs 44 lakh and Rs 26 lakh, respectively. The police came to know about the role of middlemen while questioning the other three students.
While commenting on the role of middlemen in the case, an officer has informed Indin Express, "They would approach those who had failed to clear to the entrance exam. They would lure them saying that they are in good terms with the assistant dean and he would help them secure a seat."
The Investigating Officer, Inspector Dilip Ghuge has told Indian Express that in an attempt to make their claims look real, the middlemen used to take the students and their parents to Verma's cabin. He added, "The assistant dean would assure the students that they will get admission and ask them to cooperate with the middlemen. Following this, the students paid money to the middlemen."
When asked how the middlemen got hold of the number of the students, Inspector Ghuge told Indian Express, "We are trying to figure that out. The arrest of these two middlemen is important, as they are the masterminds of the racket."
Police have also learnt about a link between the assistant dean and four other middlemen. Indian Express adds that these four had been arrested for duping a Jharkhand-based businessman of Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of getting his daughter admission into MBBS course at Sion hospital. Police are trying to gather evidence on this.
