An Instagram reel claims that fenugreek can eliminate diabetes in 6 weeks. The claim is FALSE.

Claim

In an Instagram reel, it is claimed that fenugreek can eliminate diabetes in 6 weeks. The user farhaal.sweety in the reel says, "For diabetes, to completely eliminate it, you can reverse your sugar in just six weeks. Listen carefully, this fenugreek seeds — 60 grams, 60 grams, 60 grams of fenugreek seeds — soak them in a glass of water at night and leave it for 12 hours. After 12 hours, in the morning, mix it with a spoon and then strain and drink that water. Drink this water twice — once in the morning and once at night. Just drink the water, do not eat the seeds, only drink the water. Do this for six weeks. You will be surprised. This is very useful for all diabetes patients."

The reel can be accessed here

Fact Check

The claim by the user is FALSE. Fenugreek may aid in managing diabetes, but it cannot cure it, as diabetes is a chronic condition.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a long-term health condition that arises when the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin or when the body cannot use insulin properly. Insulin is a crucial hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Poorly controlled diabetes can result in hyperglycemia, or elevated blood sugar, which, over time, may damage various organ systems, particularly the nerves and blood vessels.

What are the Types of Diabetes?

Diabetes can occur in several forms, and the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies it into four main types:

Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes, occurs when the body fails to produce sufficient insulin, requiring daily insulin injections. As of 2017, around 9 million people were affected, mostly in high-income countries. The exact cause is still unknown, and currently, there are no established methods of prevention.

Type 2 diabetes arises when the body cannot effectively use insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels. This form can lead to long-term damage to nerves and blood vessels. It is largely preventable and linked to risk factors like obesity, lack of physical activity, and genetic influences. Regular screenings are crucial for early detection, as symptoms may be mild or absent until complications occur. Type 2 diabetes accounts for over 95% of all diabetes cases and, although traditionally seen in adults, is increasingly being diagnosed in children.

Gestational diabetes is a condition marked by elevated blood sugar during pregnancy that does not meet the threshold for diabetes diagnosis. It increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery and raises the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes for both mother and child. It is usually detected through routine prenatal screenings.

Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glycemia (IFG) are considered prediabetic states, with blood sugar levels higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range. While they increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, progression is not guaranteed.

Can Diabetes Be Eliminated or Cured?

While diabetes cannot currently be cured or completely eliminated, many people can manage their diabetes effectively and even achieve diabetes reversal. This refers to controlling blood glucose levels so well, mainly through consistent healthy eating and regular physical activity that medications are no longer needed. However, sustaining this condition requires lifelong commitment to lifestyle changes and continuous monitoring.

What are the Health Benefits Of Fenugreek?

Fenugreek, one of the oldest known medicinal herbs, is valued for its impressive nutritional and therapeutic profile. Its seeds contain a high amount of fiber, phospholipids, glycolipids, oleic acid, linoleic and linolenic acids, choline, and vitamins such as A, B1, B2, C, along with niacin and nicotinic acid. Commonly used as a culinary spice worldwide, fenugreek also stands out for its health benefits, offering antidiabetic, anticancer, cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant, and immune-boosting effects.

Can Fenugreek Eliminate Diabetes In 6 Weeks?

The claim that fenugreek can eliminate diabetes in 6 weeks is FALSE. While fenugreek may provide mild blood sugar-lowering effects when included in a well-rounded diabetes management plan, it is important to understand that diabetes is a chronic condition and cannot be reversed, especially not within a short span of six weeks.

Fenugreek has gained attention for its potential role in managing diabetes due to its bioactive compounds and therapeutic properties. An article published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences reported that fenugreek significantly improves glycemic control and lipid profiles in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The study concluded that fenugreek may serve as a safe and effective adjunct in the management of Type 2 diabetes.

Similarly, a study by Ethan Basch et al. highlights the traditional medicinal significance of fenugreek. The researchers observed that fenugreek has been historically utilized in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for diverse therapeutic purposes, including stimulating labor, supporting digestion, and acting as a general tonic to boost metabolism and promote overall well-being.

Fenugreek can help lower blood sugar to some extent when used alongside a full diabetes treatment plan, but diabetes is a lifelong condition and cannot be cured in just six weeks.

Dr Aman Rathore, DNB, Critical Care Medicine, Max Super Specialty Hospital, shared insights with Health Dialogues and said, "The claim that fenugreek can eliminate diabetes in 6 weeks is False and not supported by scientific evidence. Fenugreek is a herb traditionally used in Indian medicine, and studies suggest that its seeds may help lower blood sugar levels due to the presence of soluble fiber and a compound called 4-hydroxyisoleucine, which may improve insulin sensitivity. However, calling it a cure—or expecting results in just six weeks—is an overstatement.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition that requires a multifactorial approach—medications, lifestyle changes, and dietary modifications. While fenugreek may be used as an adjunct to conventional therapy under medical supervision, it should never replace prescribed treatment.

Moreover, there is no peer-reviewed evidence suggesting that fenugreek alone can reverse or eliminate diabetes within any fixed short period such as six weeks. Patients should be cautious about such claims circulating on social media or alternative health platforms, as they may delay proper care."

Dr. Vikash Maskara, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), consultant at Narayana Hospital, Barasat told Medical Dialogues, "No drug or supplement, including fenugreek, can cure diabetes. However, adding fenugreek to your diet may help lower blood sugar levels. It can support diabetes management but should not be seen as a cure."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

The claim that fenugreek can eliminate diabetes in six weeks is FALSE. Fenugreek may play a helpful role in blood sugar management as a complementary therapy, but it is not a cure. Diabetes is a chronic, lifelong condition that must be addressed with medical supervision, lifestyle modification, and medication.

Hence, the claim is FALSE.
