Ahmedabad: In a major setback to Gujarat, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has slashed 250 MBBS seats in three medical colleges across the State.
Ahmedabad Mirror has reported that the Commission has reduced the MBBS intakes in these three medical colleges after finding serious irregularities during recent inspections. The Commission reportedly noted issues including lack of infrastructure, shortage of faculty, and mismanagement.
The Commission's decision to reduce MBBS seat intake in these three medical colleges was reflected in the MBBS seat matrix recently published by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that MCC officially released the tentative list of medical colleges and MBBS seat matrix for NEET 2025 counselling. According to the notification, altogether 775 medical colleges across 35 States and Union Territories will participate in the undergraduate medical admission process this year.
MCC released the seat matrix after the National Medical Commission (NMC) provided the tentative seat matrix for the First Round of MBBS seats for medical colleges across the country via an email dated 17.07.2025.

As per the seat matrix, Gujarat has around 7,000 MBBS seats. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Mirror has reported that Gujarat has lost altogether 250 MBBS seats in three medical colleges. These affected medical colleges included Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Kalol, which has been allotted with zero seats by the NMC this year. For the last two academic years, the institute had an intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats.
Reportedly, the Commission found large-scale irregularities at the institute during inspection and decided to cancel all admissions for this academic year.
Apart from this, another affected college is Amreli Medical College. Even though the college had 200 seats previously, this year, the Apex Medical Commission has allotted only 150 MBBS seats to it.
Similarly, the Commission had also slashed 50 MBBS seats from Dr Kiran C Patel Medical College and Research Institute in Surat. Instead of 200 MBBS seats, the college will admit only 150 MBBS seats this year. With this, Gujarat has lost altogether 250 MBBS seats and its intake capacity for MBBS admissions this year.
Ahmedabad Mirror has reported that the Commission launched inspections at medical colleges across India to ensure the standards of medical education. However, many of the colleges were found lacking in basic requirements such as a shortage of teachers, proper hospital setups, and genuine data.
Some of the colleges failed to make the required changes despite receiving repeated warnings. Therefore, the Commission was forced to take strict action by cutting or cancelling seats.
While Amreli and Bharuch medical colleges, which were set up under the Brownfield category, received Rs 75 crore aid, Kalol's Swaminarayanan Medical college, which was started under the Greenfield Category, received Rs 45 crore in government support.
It is not only Gujarat that has lost its MBBS seats this year. Ahmedabad Mirror has reported that NMC has cancelled more than 6,000 MBBS seats across more than 700 medical colleges in the country after it found serious irregularities during recent inspections.
In the recently released seat matrix, NMC allotted zero seats to nine institutes including (1) Gayathri Vidya Parishad Institute of Health Care & Medical Technology, Visakhapatnam, (2) Shri Rawatpura Sarkar Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Raipur, (3) Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Guru Ravidas marg, Hamdard Nagar, (4) Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Kalol, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, (5) Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum, (6) Index Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Indore, (7) Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital, Udaipur, (8) Father Colombo Institute of Medical Sciences, Warangal, and (9) National Capital Region Institute of Medical Sciences, Meerut.
