Severe hypoglycemia related to heart failure risk in T2D
Severe hypoglycemia is associated with a greater risk of heart failure, reveals a study of a large cohort of adults with type 2 diabetes. The study appears in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
In the study, Justin B Echouffo-Tcheugui, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA, and colleagues evaluated the association of severe hypoglycemia with incident HF among individuals with type 2 diabetes. The association was investigated in participants of the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study.

Calcium Fortified Beverages have beneficial effect
Calcium, one of the most important nutrients, determines the quality of life of the elderly. It has been reported that 7 out of 10 people over the age of 60 have insufficient calcium intake. A recent study finding suggests that intake of calcium-fortified beverages (CFB) has a beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity and some antioxidant enzymes in healthy elderly. The study findings were published in the journal Clinical Nutrition Research on October 28, 2021.
Calcium intake should be sufficient in daily life so that the antioxidant system is not inhibited by a calcium deficiency in the elderly. However, many elderly are unable to consume sufficient, let alone optimal, levels of certain nutrients (calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12) solely by diet. If various products using food materials with high calcium content are developed, it will help the elderly to meet the daily calcium requirement. Therefore, researchers of the Kyungnam University, Changwon 51767, Korea conducted a study using calcium-fortified beverage (CFB) which was prepared using calcium-rich sprouted barley grass and chickpea powder to increase calcium intake for healthy elderly. They evaluated the effect of CFB intake on insulin sensitivity and antioxidant metabolism in healthy elderly.

Nicotinamide and pyruvate help improve vision
A new study reveals that a combination of nicotinamide and pyruvate significantly improved visual function in the short term. The results confirm previous experimental research suggesting a role for these agents in neuroprotection for people with glaucoma and confirming the need for long-term studies to establish their usefulness in slowing progression. The findings of this study were published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology on 18th November 2021.
This study was conducted by Carlos Gustavo De Moraes and the team with the objective to see if a combination of nicotinamide and pyruvate can enhance retinal ganglion cell activity in people with glaucoma, as evaluated by routine automated perimetry.

Quadruple therapies significantly improve patients with H. pylori
A recent study showed that consecutive therapy with amoxicillin, tetracycline, and furazolidone yielded a high eradication rate (>90%) with acceptable compliance and tolerability in difficult-to-treat H. pylori infection. The findings of this study were published in Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology on 19th August 2021.
Helicobacter pylori is present in around 40% of the world's population. H. pylori eradication alleviates gastric atrophy and avoids metachronous gastric cancer as a prevalent infection causing a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. Jing Liu and the team conducted this study with the purpose to compare the efficacy of two different 1-week triple treatments administered back-to-back in individuals with difficult-to-treat Helicobacter pylori infection. Patients with established H. pylori infection were enrolled for this trial after more than three failed routine triple eradication attempts.
