73,157 PG Medical Seats available in India- 57866 MD, MS, 11472 DNB: Health Ministry gives breakup

Among the total 73157 PG medical seats, there are 57866 MD/MS, 11472 DNB, 590 FNB, and 3229 Post MBBS Diploma seats available in the country.

New Delhi: India has altogether 73,157 postgraduate medical seats available in the country, the Union Minister of State for Health Smt. Anupriya Patel informed the Lok Sabha recently.

The Union MoS Health provided the details of the available MBBS and postgraduate medical seats in India while responding to the queries raised by Parliament member Shri Ve Vaithilingam.

Shri Vaithilingam sought the details of the total number of undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats in respect of the Government and Private medical colleges in the country. Further, he also sought to know whether 50% of the total seats being contained from private medical colleges have to be filled under Government Quota. He also sought the details of the percentage of seats earmarked for NRIs under the All India Quota seats, the total number of undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats in the country (State/UT wise) etc.

In response to the queries, MoS Health informed that the Government has increased the number of MBBS and PG medical seats. She further informed that there are a total number of 1,18,137 MBBS and 73,157 Post-graduate medical seats in the country.

State/UT wise details of PG Medical Seats in the Country for 2024-2025:

As per the data provided by the Minister, among the total number of 73157 PG medical seats, there are 57866 MD/MS, 11472 DNB, 590 FNB, 3229 Post MBBS Diploma seats available in the country.

Among these 57866 PG Medical seats, Karnataka has the highest number of postgraduate medical seats i.e. 6906 seats, followed by 6348 seats in Maharashtra and 5339 seats in Tamil Nadu.

Further, Andhra Pradesh has 3652 PG medical seats, Assam has 742 seats, Bihar has 1356 seats, Chandigarh has 607 seats, Chhattisgarh has 589 seats, Dadra & Nagar Haveli has 10 seats, Delhi has 2938 seats, Goa has 149 seats, Gujarat has 3120 seats, Haryana has 958 seats, Himachal Pradesh has 362 seats, Jammu & Kashmir has 657 seats, Jharkhand has 272 seats, Kerala has 2006 seats, Madhya Pradesh has 2587 seats, Maharashtra has 6348 seats, Manipur has 255 seats, Meghalaya has 37 seats, Odisha has 1257 seats, Puducherry has 1076 seats, Punjab has 821 seats, Rajasthan has 3602 seats, Sikkim has 34 seats, Telangana has 3346 seats, Tripura has 97 seats, UP has 4671 seats, Uttarakhand has 1914 seats, and West Bengal has 2158 seats.

Note: Data for 2024-25 may vary on granting of permission by NMC for new Colleges/ increase of seats and on withdrawal of permission for Colleges /Seats.

There are altogether 1,18,137 MBBS seats available in India and among these 60,422 seats are available in the government medical colleges and 57,715 MBBS seats are available in the private medical colleges, the Union Minister of State for Health Smt. Anupriya Patel had earlier informed the Lok Sabha. The data revealed that while Karnataka has the maximum number (12545) of MBBS seats, the State of Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of medical colleges (86 colleges).

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission had released the seat matrix as per which 49,772 postgraduate medical seats were available in 81 specialities at 586 medical institutes across the country for the academic year 2024-2025. Writing to the Principal/Dean of all the medical colleges/medical institutes of India, the Secretary of NMC, Dr. B Srinivas released the details of the Seat Matrix of all the postgraduate medical courses for the academic year 2024-2025 as on 18.11.2024.

"As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), 15% of MBBS seats and 50% of the PG seats in Government Medical Colleges and all seats in Deemed Universities are filled through All India Quota. The remaining seats of Government Medical Colleges and seats in private Medical Colleges are filled through the concerned State Counselling Authorities. Further, 15% of the total All India seats of deemed universities are earmarked for NRIs," informed the MoS Health.

The All India Quota seats in Puducherry for the Academic year 2024-25 are as under:

i. MBBS seats

a. Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Puducherry (Government Institution) - 37 seats

b. Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry (Deemed University) - 250 seats

c. Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry (Deemed University) - 150 seats

ii. Post Graduate seats

a. Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry (Deemed University) - 63 Seats

b. Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry (Government Institution) - 27 Seats
