NCISM approves Govt Ayurvedic medical college in Tripura with 60 BAMS seats

Agartala: In a major boost to Ayurvedic medical education in the Northeast, the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has accepted the Tripura Government's proposal to establish a new Ayurvedic medical college with 60 undergraduate seats.
The proposed institution, to be known as Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital in Udaipur, Gomati district, is expected to commence the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) course from the academic session 2026-27.
Announcing the development, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said that at the request of the Tripura government, the Union Ministry of AYUSH has approved the establishment of a total of 60-seat 'Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital' in Udaipur, in the Gomati district of South Tripura.
This significant achievement will greatly strengthen Ayurvedic education, promote traditional systems of medicine, and create new opportunities for aspiring students in Tripura, while also improving healthcare services for the people of the state.
The Chief Minister expressed happiness over this development in a post on the social media platform 'X', he wrote, "The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under the Union Ministry of Ayush has approved our application to start the Tripura Government's Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital in Udaipur. It will have a capacity of 60 seats starting from the 2026-27 academic session."
He further wrote, “My heartfelt gratitude and sincere thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visionary leadership and unwavering support in strengthening healthcare and medical education across the country”.
Along with this, the Chief Minister has attached a copy of the Ministry of AYUSH's letter to his social media post. Through this letter, Saha informed that the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has approved the state government's proposal.
As per the letter “The Application respectively received from Shri Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao, IAS, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura for seeking permission of Medical Assessment and Rating Board, NCISM to start a new Ayurveda college in the name of Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, Tepania, Udaipur Gomati Tripura-799125" with an intake capacity of 60 seats in UG (BAMS) course from the academic session 2026-27”.
The applications for opening new Ayurveda undergraduate medical colleges with a capacity of 60 seats will be accepted and considered for the 2026-27 academic session, provided that the prescribed requirements and applicable legal provisions are met.
“Further it is inform that as per Minimum Essential Standards, Assessment and Rating (MESAR) UG Regulations, 2024 there is no provision for establishment of an Undergraduate (BAMS) course with an intake capacity of 60 seats under for establishment of Ayurveda section 29 of NCISM Act 2020 and the matter with regard to retention of the provision under graduate medical colleges with an intake capacity of 60 seats was placed before the meeting of Commission and it for establishment of new Ayurveda Undergraduate is decided that submission of Applications Medical Colleges from the Academic Session 2026-27 with an intake capacity of 60 seats shall be accepted and considered onwards, subject to fulfillment of the prescribed requirements and applicable statutory provisions”, the letter further added.
Therefore, the approval has been granted to the Tripura government's proposal to establish a new institution named 'Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital'. This institution will offer 60 undergraduate seats for the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) course, starting from the 2026-27 academic session.
“Therefore, the application submitted for seeking permission from the MARBISM to establish a new Ayurvedic Medical college in the name of Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, Tepania, Udaipur Gomati Tripura-799125 with an intake capacity of 60 seats in UG (BAMS) course under section 29 of the NCISM Act 2020 from the academic session 2026-27 is hereby accepted. Further, the application will be processed in accordance with the provisions of the applicable Regulations”, the letter said.
This letter was addressed to Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tripura, and Dr Mukul Patel, President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board for the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine.
