Verify Genuineness of EWS Certificates for MBBS Admissions: BFUHS Asks Deputy Commissioners
Faridkot: The authorities at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) have asked the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to crosscheck the genuineness of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificates issued to around 10 candidates, who want to get admitted to the the MBBS course at government medical colleges in the State.
This comes after, allegations were made that MBBS aspirants were using "dubious" EWS certificates for securing their MBBS admission at three government medical colleges.
As per the latest media report by The Tribune, these three government medical colleges are located in Amritsar, Faridkot, and Patiala and they offer 50 MBBS seats for the EWS candidates.
According to the existing rules, candidates deemed to be eligible under the EWS category must be from a family with an income less than Rs 8 lakh per annum. The district administration issues the EWS certificates after verifying the annual income and landholding in the name of the candidate's parents.

If a candidate falls under the EWS category, they can avail of the 10 per cent reservation in the Government jobs and for admission to educational institutes since January 2019.
The Tribune has reported that during the ongoing MBBS admission process, altogether 149 candidates applied for 50 EWS reserved MBBS seats. After they failed to get admitted on EWS reserved seats, 11 of these candidates, allegedly belonging to EWS category, were admitted to private medical colleges on management and NRI quota by paying Rs 20 lakh per annum. As per the daily, the MBBS course fee for the management quota seats ranges from Rs 58.02 lakh to Rs 63.94 lakh. However, for the NRI quota seats, the fee is $1.10 lakh.
The Daily has reported that one of the "dubious" candidates changed his status from EWS to NRI to get admitted to GMC, Amritsar by paying US$ 1.10 lakh tuition fee.
Commenting on the matter, the Vice-Chancellor of BFUHS, Dr. Rajeev Sood said that the University has sought a verification report of the EWS certificates of 11 candidates from the concerned Deputy Commissioners. Dr. Sood informed that they have been requested to submit the report within the next 72 hours.
