BRD medical college 18 MBBS students, interns suspended, fined Rs 25k each for ragging

Gorakhpur: Eighteen senior students of BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur have been suspended and fined Rs 25,000 each following an investigation into allegations of ragging involving first-year MBBS students. The students facing action include 16 MBBS students from the 2025 batch and two interns.
While the 16 MBBS students have been suspended for one week, the two interns have been suspended for one month and directed to undergo additional training.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the college administration had launched an investigation into allegations that 18 senior students entered the hostel of first-year MBBS students with their faces covered on two occasions in October.
The investigation began after an unidentified person lodged a complaint with the National Medical Commission (NMC). Following the complaint, the commission directed the college administration to investigate the matter and submit a report.
The alleged incidents took place at a Hostel, where first-year MBBS students from the 2026 batch are staying. The students had joined the college around 25 days earlier. As per the hostel rules, senior students are not allowed to enter the hostel.
According to the allegations, senior students entered the hostel late at night on two occasions in October. They reportedly used the hostel rooftop and an emergency exit near the rear mess to gain entry. CCTV cameras installed on the premises captured some students entering with their faces covered.
Following this, the college's Anti-Ragging Squad took note of the complaint, examined CCTV footage, and conducted an on-the-spot investigation to identify those involved.
Based on its findings, 18 senior students were identified. At a meeting of the Anti-Ragging Committee last week, it was also decided to call the parents of the students involved.
As per Jagran report, Principal Dr Dharmendra Kumar confirmed the disciplinary action, stating that all 18 students had been fined Rs 25,000 each. He said the MBBS students had been suspended for one week, while the two interns would have to undergo an additional month of training.
