Srinagar: In a boost to postgraduate medical education, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has received 12 additional PG medical seats, taking the total intake from 242 to 254 for the current academic year, according to Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo.
The increase includes five additional seats in MD Pathology, taking the intake from 18 to 23, and two seats each in MD Paediatrics and MD Pharmacology, increasing their intake from 18 to 20 and 10 to 12, respectively.
The college has also received one additional seat in MD Microbiology and the total number of seats went up from seven to eight. Further, two seats have been introduced in MD Respiratory Medicine for the first time.
Sharing the update on X, Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo said that 70 MBBS seats and 56 PG seats have been added to GMC Jammu over the past two years. She also indicated that DM and MCh super-speciality seats are expected to be added shortly.
The minister attributed the development to the efforts being made under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to strengthen medical education in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Over the last two years, 70 MBBS and 56 PG seats have been added, with DM/MCh seats also expected shortly. Another milestone under the leadership of Hon’ble CM Jb Omar Abdullah towards strengthening medical education in J&K," Sakina said in the post.
Medical Dialogues reported that the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) released an updated Seat Matrix for Postgraduate (PG) Broad Speciality Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27. According to the data shared by the Commission, a total of 68305 MD, MS, Diploma and MCh (6 year) seats in PG Broad Speciality courses are available.
The revised seat matrix includes the additional seats granted by MARB after processing the applications received for an increase in the intake capacity of the existing PG courses and commencement of new PG courses in the existing medical institutes.
