GMC Kamareddy suspends 14 MBBS students for ragging

Hyderabad: Taking action against allegation of ragging and harassment of junior medical students, the authorities of Government Medical College (GMC), Kamareddy has suspended 14 second year students from four to six months period.
Among the 14 students, four have been suspended for six months, while the remaining ten have been barred from attending classes for four months based on the college’s anti-ragging committee report which found the seniors involvement in the incident.
The ragging incident came to light after the junior students filed an online complaint with the National Medical Commission's (NMC) Anti-Ragging Cell in Delhi around a week ago alleging of being harassed by their seniors on the college campus.
Following the complaint, the NMC alerted the local police and college authorities, prompting the institution to initiate an internal inquiry through its anti-ragging mechanism.
During the investigation, the authorities examined video footage and other available material. Based on the findings, 14 senior students were reportedly identified as being involved in the alleged incident.
Explaining the circumstances, college principal Dr B Valya told TOI that the freshers and final-year students were accommodated in a common hostel, while second-year students stayed outside the college hostel.
"The second-year students were regularly entering the hostel where the first-year students were staying. They would trouble the freshers by asking them to repeatedly introduce themselves, repeat their names for a few minutes and make them do other chores. We caught them on campus a few times and warned them, but they continued to still trespass. This continued for three to four days and caused considerable mental distress to the juniors," said Dr Valya.
Speaking to TNIE, Dr Valya said "The inquiry committee found that 14 students had participated in the incident. Of them, 10 students directly involved were suspended for six months, while the others were barred from attending classes for four months."
He clarified that third-year students had no involvement in the incident. The principal said anti-ragging committees were actively functioning on the campus and that the college was taking strict measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
