NMC inspects Dhanbad Medical College for 100 MBBS Seats
Dhanbad: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Jharkhand, the National Medical Commission (NMC) team recently commenced the assessment of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) for 100 MBBS Seats.
The NMC assessor team includes Prof ( Dr) PK Dubey, Prof (Dr) Jitram Kesri from Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science Sheikhpura Patna, Prof Dr Pranita Dafadar of Burdwan Medical College ( Bengal).
Confirming about the NMC inspection, the Principal of SNMMCH, Dr. Jyotiranjan Prasad informed that the medical college would hopefully get NMC nod for 100 MBBS seats for the academic session 2023-2024 on the basis of the assessment report of the NMC team.
Although the Principal assured that most of the deficiencies have been removed, he admitted that there is still not enough faculty members and the deficiency of 150-seat lecture theater still existed.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NMC, erstwhile Medical Council of India, had permitted the then PMCH to increase its intake strength from 50 to 100 in 2013-14 on the condition that the state government fills up all the vacant faculty posts within six months. But the posts are yet to be filled even after eight years of the commitment given by the state.
While the posts remained vacant, the institute went on admitting 100 students in 2014, 2015, and 2016. NMC again reduced the intake strength of the institute to 50 in 2017. The NMC team inspected the institute four times in 2015, thrice in 2016, and twice each in 2017, 2018, and 2019. It warned the institute of derecognition on every inspection visit but the vacant posts of faculty were not filled up so far.
Back in 2021 NMC had threatened to derecognize the medical college owing to the non-compliance by the college administration to its earlier directives. Currently, the State-owned medical college has permission for only 50 MBBS seats. Meanwhile, back in 2019 three new medical colleges of the State Government- Dumka, Hazaribagh, and Palamu were opened in 2019 and they have NMC permission for 100 MBBS seats.
As per the latest media report by Lagatar 24, recently a three-member team of NMC commenced the inspection at SNMMCH for 100 MBBS seats. The team clubbed in two groups. Whole one group inspected the hospital, the other group commenced inspection for the non-clinical department of the college.
Apart from the wards, OTs and emergencies, the NMC team also assessed the daily attendance of OPD patients, the register of doctors' attendance and collected details regarding the HoD of different clinical departments.
Speaking about the NMC inspection, the Principal Dr. Prasad told the daily, “I am hopeful to get 100 MBBS seats granted in the 2023 session after today’s inspection as the institution had already fulfilled all deficiencies in the 2022 session pointed out by the previous NMC team. The maximum hurdles that were in getting 100 seats in MBBS have been removed. So this time we are confident of getting permission.”
However, admitting that the deficiency of faculty members and 150-seat lecture theater still existed, the Principal added, “Tenders have already been issued for lecture theater and it would not be a hurdle.”
