Young Doctor Dies in Mysterious Canal Crash

Kottyam: A tragic accident claimed the life of a 33-year-old doctor after his car plunged into a canal at Thottukadavu in Vaikom on Friday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Dr Amal Suraj, a native of Ottapalam in Palakkad district, who was working at a private hospital in Kottarakkara, Kollam, according to a recent PTI report.

According to the news reports, local residents noticed the wheel of a car sticking out of the canal and immediately alerted authorities. Fire and Rescue personnel, along with the police, reached the spot and pulled the vehicle out of the water. Upon inspection, the doctor’s body was found inside the car.

The body has been shifted to the Government Hospital in Vaikom for post-mortem. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, officials said, reports the Metro Vartha.

Investigators claimed the accident occurred in the early hours of the morning, likely going unnoticed in the darkness.

Speaking to Onmanorama, the Police confirmed his identity based on the vehicle’s registration details. Initial investigation suggests that the accident may have occurred while he was travelling to Ottappalam from Kottarakkara. Police are examining CCTV footage from the route to determine the exact sequence of events.

Authorities suspect that the doctor may have either dozed off while driving or taken a wrong turn, possibly after being misdirected by Google Maps.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a 35-year-old general physician associated with KIMS-Sunshine Hospital tragically lost his life following a road accident at Greenlands, Panjagutta. He was returning from duty, riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, when a sand-laden 16-wheeler lorry struck the vehicle from behind. The deceased, identified as Dr Kasturi Jagadish Chandra, worked as a consultant at various private hospitals in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
