5 doctors booked for negligence after sponge left inside woman's abdomen

Yamunanagar: A case of medical negligence has been registered against five doctors after a surgical sponge was reportedly left inside a woman's abdomen during a C-section surgery. Two doctors from a private hospital at Jagadhri allegedly performed the surgery, while two radiologists and a surgeon from a private hospital in Yamunanagar are reportedly involved in attempting to cover up the matter.
Based on the patient's complaint, the police have registered an FIR against the two doctors who performed the surgery, along with two radiologists and the surgeon from Yamunanagar, who are accused of attempting to destroy or suppress evidence related to the case.
According to a report by The Tribune, the complainant, a resident of Bibipur village in Yamunanagar district, informed the police that she was admitted to the Jagadhri hospital on March 12, 2025, for delivery. The following day, two doctors performed a caesarean section. She alleged that a surgical sponge was reportedly left inside her abdomen during the procedure.
After her discharge from the hospital, the patient continued to experience severe abdominal pain. She underwent ultrasound scans at two different diagnostic centres to identify the cause of the pain. However, doctors at both centres reportedly concealed the presence of the surgical sponge in an attempt to protect the treating hospital doctors.
In her complaint, the patient further alleged that a surgeon based in Yamunanagar was also involved in attempting to cover up the incident.
The Tribune further reported that as her condition worsened, the patient sought treatment at a private hospital in Panchkula. Doctors at the Panchkula hospital subsequently performed another surgery to remove the sponge.
According to Police officials, an investigation is underway to determine individual responsibility and the alleged attempt to destroy evidence. Meanwhile, while speaking to the media, the accused doctors named in the FIR have denied the allegations.
