Doctor arrested for allegedly abetting wife's suicide
Ramanathapuram: A doctor, pursuing a Post Graduate (PG) degree at AIIMS Delhi was arrested by Ramanathapuram Bazaar police on Friday on charges of abetting the suicide of his doctor wife.
The arrest took place moments after the in-laws of the 33-year-old doctor and the people from their village laid siege to the Superintendent of Police office.

According to a media report in The New Indian Express, the deceased doctor was working as an Assistant Medical Officer at Devipattinam PHC. She had married the doctor, a native of Sadaiyanvalasai, who has been pursuing a PG degree from AIIMS, Delhi since 2019.
The parents of the deceased told TNIE, "Our daughter, who went to live with her husband in Delhi for a month in October was subjected to domestic violence. He objected to her working or studying further."
Both of them had returned to Ramanathapuram where the doctor attempted suicide on November 7. She was immediately taken to a private medical college hospital in Madurai, where she died on Friday during the course of her treatment. Following the news of her death, her parents and villagers laid siege to the office of the Superintendent of Police E Karthik.
The accused doctor surrendered before the police in the evening, following which his arrest was registered.
Abetment of suicide is an offence under section 306 of the IPC, and subjecting women to cruelty is an offence under section 498-A. Further, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 is an act of parliament to protect women from domestic violence in India, which include sexual, physical, economic,verbal and emotional abuse.
The act covers all women be it mother,sister, wife,widow or partners who live in a shared household. It was brought into force on 26 October, 2006.
