Dr Mahabaleswara Maiya passes away at 92

Dr Mahabaleswara Maiya
Bengaluru: Dr Mahabaleswara Maiya, a distinguished senior medical professor, passed away in Bengaluru on Sunday at the age of 92. His death marks the end of an era in medical education.
Dr Maiya dedicated more than six decades of his life to the medical field, leaving an indelible mark through his work as a senior medical professor, mentor, and organiser. Dr. Maiya began his illustrious journey in medicine after completing his MBBS from Mysore. He went on to earn prestigious fellowships, including FRCP from London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, along with fellowships from FICP and FICC (India).
Between 1964 to 1980, Dr. Maiya served as part of the teaching faculty at several government medical colleges in Karnataka, including Karnataka Medical College (KMC) Hubli, Bellary Medical College, and Bangalore Medical College.

He was instrumental in organising mega conferences at the state and national levels. He also played a key role in Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes, according to a release, reports Deccan Herald.
Dr. Maiya also contributed significantly to medical research. He headed the Karnataka state panel investigating fluorosis between 1971 and 1975 and published 18 papers in various national and state journals. His academic contributions included editorial roles in the widely regarded API Textbook of Medicine (VII and VIII Editions) and several CME publications.
Over the years, Dr. Maiya received numerous honours, including the Distinguished Member award by the Association of Physicians of India (API) in 2003 and the Infosys Award for Medical Excellence in 2006.

He was the Emeritus Chairman and Consultant Physician at Rangadore Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru, where he continued to serve patients well into his advanced years.
Dr. Mahabaleswara Maiya’s passing is a monumental loss to the Indian medical community. His life’s work will continue to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals.
