Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a senior Kolkata-based doctor allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the tenth-floor terrace of her apartment.

The incident took place at around 11:30 a.m. at an apartment of Bosepukur Road off the Kasba Connector on Tuesday. The medical practitioner was noticed walking on the terrace by the neighbors, who alerted the private security guards. However, despite the desperate attempts of the private guards to save her, she could not be saved.

As per a recent media account, the doctor has been identified as a 50-year-old resident of Bosepukur Road reportedly a schizophrenia patient who was staying alone at her apartment and was facing serious mental health issues. She often depended on her neighbors for her meals as well. The doctor was living alone in her flat for the past six years as her husband got settled in Malaysia and her son started pursuing education in Australia.

According to the initial police investigation, the doctor had been under depression for a long time and was allegedly suffering from schizophrenia. She was also suffering from gastric ulcers and other comorbidities and had to be hospitalized several times. The doctor stopped practicing a couple of years back and she had to depend on her neighbors and local police to get hospitalized whenever she needed medical assistance.
The doctor had previously received treatment for a mental condition as well. Times of India reports that one of her neighbors, Dr. Biswas who is also a specialist in a private hospital of EM Bypass stated that he had been helping the doctor since 2012 but in vain. He also informed that despite calling his husband, he refused to come back and take care of the doctor.
The deceased had been struggling with her meals and livelihood also. The neighbor informed that the doctor had to suffer a lot and was going through some mental struggles as well. He further informed that she would show disruptive behavior like ringing the bell at odd hours and seeking food and money from them.
In fact, during the lockdown, she also disregarded strict rules which the residents had put in place; however, considering her condition, the neighbors have compromised. Moreover, she kept on changing her maids constantly which was also a problem for a few residents. The residents had also written to a Kasba police in charge and informed the police that the victim needed help.
Expressing his grief over the demise of the doctor, Dr. Biswas told Times of India, " No organization came forward to help her. We contacted her husband who refused to come over to the city and help her. Finally, about a week ago, her electricity was cut off by the power supply company over non-payment of fees. We kept knocking at doors. My 76-year-old mother even proposed that we fix up her meals through an agency but she refused. It is unfortunate that we could not save her."
Commenting on the incident, DC (SSD) Rashid Munir Khan stated, "She had been showing some behavioral peculiarities of late that alarmed the other residents. On Tuesday, around 11.15 am, she managed to climb the parapet on the terrace of the apartment. A resident saw her and began shouting to attract attention. Thus alerted, at least two apartment security personnel immediately reached the terrace to bring her down. By the time they managed to reach her, it was too late and she had jumped off the terrace."
After jumping she fell on the parking space on the Western side of the complex and was found lying on her back. After the incident, she was immediately rushed to CNMC Hospital in an ambulance. However, she has declared brought dead. Meanwhile, the Kasba police were also informed. Police are still trying to find out the exact reason which might have driven the doctor to take the drastic step or if there was any reason for the victim to become suicidal in nature in recent times, reports TOI.
The local police station had earlier made arrangements to get her admitted to different hospitals for her treatment. " Being a doctor herself, used to rarely cooperate with the doctors treating her and would often actively intervene in her treatment procedures raising a din if her views were not listened to," said an investigating officer.
