Violence caught on camera: Cooper Hospital Casualty doctors attacked after patient death

Mumbai: In another shocking incident of violence against medical professionals, a Casualty Medical Officer, a resident doctor from the Medicine department, and an intern doctor of Dr R.N. Cooper Municipal General Hospital were allegedly assaulted inside the casualty ward while on duty by the relatives of a deceased patient.

According to the doctors, the attackers repeatedly struck the three doctors on the face, chest, and abdomen with extreme force, resulting in injuries and are currently under treatment. What was shocking was that the doctors claimed hospital security personnel were present during the incident, but did not intervene and remained silent spectators.

Calling the attack not just an act of violence but a brutal assault on humanity and the medical fraternity that works to save lives, the Central MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors) demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and the suspension of the negligent security staff who failed to protect the doctors.

As per Lokmat Times news report, the incident took place on Friday night when a female patient was brought to the hospital's casualty ward in an extremely critical condition between 12:22 and 12:32. She was having breathing difficulties and had no pulse. Following this, the doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to save the patient, but she was unresponsive. Shortly after, she died.

The situation escalated immediately when the doctors conveyed the information to the family, who turned violent and allegedly assaulted the doctors in rage. The assault caused serious injuries to the CMO, the resident doctor, and the intern.

Condemning the brutal assault on the three doctors, Central MARD, in its press release, stated, "These young doctors were assaulted while discharging their sacred duty—fighting to save a human life. Such courage and dedication have been met with senseless violence.

The association demanded the arrest of the attacker without delay, immediate suspension of the negligent security staff and permanent deployment of trained, armed, and accountable security personnel, especially in EMS and critical departments (casualty, ICU, OBGY wards, etc.) — under round-the-clock CCTV monitoring.

"This is not merely an act of violence—it is a brutal assault on humanity, the medical fraternity, and the very foundation of public healthcare. Doctors are not punching bags. They risk their lives daily to save others. They deserve safety, dignity, and respect—not fear and assault," said the association.
