60 year old patient dies at Shivamogga Hospital entrance, family alleges negligence

Medical Negligence
Shivamogga: A 60-year-old stroke patient died at the entrance of a teaching hospital in Shivamogga on Monday, allegedly after being made to wait for a stretcher. The patient's relatives have accused hospital staff of negligence, claiming that the delay in providing emergency medical assistance may have contributed to his death.
According to the news reports, the deceased was a resident of Muduvala village near Harnahalli in Shivamogga taluk, had suffered a stroke a few days earlier and was undergoing treatment. His condition reportedly worsened early on Monday, following which his family decided to take him to McGann Hospital on the advice of a doctor at Harnahalli.

As the patient's condition was critical, his relatives brought him to the hospital in a private vehicle without waiting for an ambulance, hoping to get him immediate medical attention.
However, upon reaching the hospital, the family allegedly faced delays at the entrance. According to the relatives, security personnel stopped them and asked them to wait as a stretcher was not immediately available.
According to the family, they requested permission to carry the patient inside themselves, but the staff allegedly refused to allow them to do so.
A resident of Muduvala alleged that the patient was made to wait for nearly half an hour and died before he could be taken inside for treatment.
“If the staff had allowed him inside and he had received emergency care, he would have survived,” he said.
Following the patient's death, his relatives reportedly confronted hospital staff, accusing them of failing to respond promptly to a medical emergency. They held the hospital personnel responsible for the delay in providing treatment.
Speaking to the Hindu, Medical Superintendent T.D. Thimmappa said that a team of officials would inquire into the allegations. “We will find out if there were any lapses on the part of the staff and take appropriate action. Our concern is that patients should receive timely treatment,” he said.
