77-Year-Old Patient's Death Sparks Violence, stone pelting at Sahyadri Hospital

Relatives Vandalise Sahyadri Hospital After Patient’s Death in Hadapsar

Pune: In a shocking incident, more than a dozen relatives of a 77-year-old patient resorted to stone pelting and vandalism at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital in Hadapsar on Wednesday morning, shortly after the patient passed away during treatment. Police have begun detaining those involved, and the hospital is preparing to file an official complaint.

According to the Pune Police, the group created chaos around 11 am, damaging the glass panes at the hospital entrance and several windows.

Speaking to the Indian Express, an officer from the Hadapsar Police Station said, “Our initial information suggests that these people are relatives of the patient. And following the patient’s death, they started pelting stones and damaged the glass panes of the entrance and windows. They used barricade stands to break the glass.”

Police teams reached the location immediately and are detaining those involved. No injuries have been reported, and the incident is under investigation.

Dr. Sunil Rao, Chief Operating Officer of Sahyadri Hospitals, stated that the patient had been admitted to the hospital in Hadapsar on November 28. He had been treated for acute pancreatitis at a private nursing home in Hadapsar, and after an internal perforation, he was brought to Sahyadri Hospital by his relatives.

Dr. Rao mentioned that the hospital’s surgical team successfully treated the patient and closed the perforation. The patient was also managed by a critical care expert and the Director of the ICU during his recovery.

“The patient had recovered well. However, due to his long-standing comorbidities, there was a slow deterioration, and the relatives were also counselled about the medical condition. Unfortunately, he passed away this morning. Despite our counselling the relatives, they turned abusive and this morning pelted stones and damaged part of the building. We will be filing a police complaint,” Dr Rao added, reports the Indian Express.
