842-bed Super-Speciality Block opens at GMCH Ernakulam

New Super-Speciality Wing Expands Critical Care Services at Kalamassery
Kochi: A new super-speciality block at Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Kalamassery, is set to transform healthcare services in Ernakulam. The eight-storey facility, inaugurated on Tuesday, houses 842 beds and 16 operation theatres, significantly expanding the hospital’s capacity and range of medical services.
Built under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) projects, the block was completed at a cost of Rs 286.66 crore.

According to TOI, the block will include departments such as neurosurgery, gynaecology, gastroenterology, cardiothoracic surgery, paediatric surgery, urology, nephrology, transplant services, dialysis units, and critical care services.
In addition, the hospital features a Mother and Child Super-Speciality Block, a microbiology laboratory constructed at a cost of Rs 1.97 crore with funding from the ICMR, and twelve pay wards built at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore from the Plan Fund of the Department of Health and Family Welfare.
Modern patient amenities complement the medical infrastructure, with a neonatology unit, a modern labour room, advanced scanning and X-ray equipment, 18 lifts, parking for 715 vehicles, an RO plant, and a reliable water supply.
As Kerala’s commercial and industrial hub, Kochi has long witnessed growing demand for advanced medical facilities. Patients from the high ranges of Idukki and the coastal belt of Alappuzha frequently depend on the medical college for specialised treatment.
The foundation stone for the super-speciality block was laid in 2019, with completion initially scheduled for December 2020. However, construction was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related challenges.
