Elderly woman allegedly operated on wrong knee at Lucknow Hospital, family seeks probe

Lucknow: In a case of alleged medical negligence, an elderly woman was reportedly operated on the right knee instead of the left at a private hospital in Gomti Nagar Extension, Lucknow.
According to the family's complaint, the woman was admitted to the hospital for treatment of her left knee and underwent surgery on September 11 after being. They alleged that the surgical procedure was mistakenly performed on the other knee.
The family further claimed that treatment worth around Rs 2.5 lakh was covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, while they paid an additional Rs 70,000 in cash during the course of treatment. The patient was discharged on September 14.
The relatives said they realised after the surgery that the wrong knee had been operated upon. They then approached the hospital and raised the matter with the doctors and staff. According to the family, they were allegedly pressured to keep the matter from becoming public and were threatened when they questioned the hospital about the procedure, reports Prabhat Khabar.
The family has since approached the police, the Chief Medical Officer’s office and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, seeking action in the matter.
Taking note of the complaint, the health department issued a notice to the hospital. An officer handling nursing home and hospital-related matters said the authorities have sought details of the surgery and the patient’s treatment records.
The hospital has been asked to explain the circumstances surrounding the procedure and provide the relevant medical documents. Officials said further action would be considered if the response is not found satisfactory.
Meanwhile, police said they had received information about the incident through social media but had not received a formal written complaint from the patient’s family or the hospital at the time of their statement.
The Gomti Nagar Extension police said that once a complaint is submitted, the allegations will be examined and appropriate action will follow based on the findings.
