Inquiry launched after dead cockroach allegedly found in patient's dal at Thane Hospital

Thane: A dead cockroach was allegedly found in a bowl of dal served to a patient at CSMM Hospital in Thane, prompting the hospital administration to launch an inquiry into the incident.

The incident reportedly took place on August 28, when an elderly woman from Airoli was served dinner at the hospital. Fellow patients allegedly noticed a dead cockroach in the dal and photographed the dish. The photographs subsequently circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the incident.

Speaking to TOI, Swapnali Kadam, dean of CSMM Hospital, said the administration had taken cognisance of media reports about the incident and initiated a probe, the report of which is awaited. "Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, we have started pest control and sanitisation of our kitchen area," said Kadam.

Following the incident, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers inspected the hospital premises and questioned municipal officials over the quality of food being served to patients. MNS leaders claimed that they had received repeated complaints about poor food quality and accused the municipal corporation administration of failing to maintain adequate oversight, reports Jagran.

The hospital prepares meals for over 1,000 people daily for thousands of patients coming from Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali and nearby rural areas.

MNS activist Swapnil Mahindrakar said he had written to the municipal commissioner and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seeking an inspection of the hospital kitchen and its food-handling practices.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, in a disturbing incident, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital has come under controversy after a cockroach was allegedly found in food served at the doctors' hostel mess, raising serious concerns over food safety and hygiene standards. Taking steps in the matter, the hospital administration has initiated an inquiry and hygiene inspection and assured action against those found responsible for not maintaining hygiene standards.
