Odisha: VIMSAR recruits 26 Assistant Professors

Sambalpur: Over twenty-six Assistant Professors have been recruited to different departments in the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences And Research (VIMSAR) in Burla to deal with the issue of faculty shortage.

The New Indian Express reports that the new appointments comprise six doctors in the Pathology department, three doctors each for Anesthesiology and Community medicine, two doctors each in the Department of Biochemistry, General Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology one each for the department of Dentistry, General Medicine, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, and Pulmonary medicine.

Lalit Meher, Director of VIMSAR said, "While we had 33 vacancies, we have recruited 26 doctors on Tuesday. I believe, currently, we have the minimum number of vacancies compared to other government medical colleges in the state."

The new appointees would be joining within the next 15 days, however, the in-service doctors would take some time as they could join only after they are relieved from their current place of duty. Meher added that the rest of the vacancies would be soon filled.

Dr Sanjeeb Mishra of VIMSAR told TNIE, "the shortage of faculty was affecting education as well as health service in the institution. The appointments will go a long way in boosting healthcare in the institution."

The health institution has been reeling under faculty shortage for a long time. The number of MBBS seats in the institute had also increased from 150 to 200, and along with it, there are over 300 PG seats in the institution.

The VIMSAR officials reportedly took up the step of filling up the vacant teaching posts in the institution because of the National Medical Commission's (NMC) proposed inspection and increasing patient load in the hospital.
