RMLIMS Lucknow plans 70-bed burns, plastic surgery facility

Lucknow: In a move to strengthen specialised burn care in Uttar Pradesh, the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) is planning to establish dedicated departments for burns and plastic surgery, with a combined capacity of 70 beds.
The proposed facility will make RMLIMS the second government healthcare institution in Lucknow to offer specialised treatment in these areas.
According to the news reports, the facility will include a 30-bed burns ward, a 30-bed plastic surgery ward, a dedicated operation theatre (OT) and a 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU), RMLIMS director Prof. CM Singh said.

The project is currently at the planning stage. Once the proposal is prepared, it will be sent to the state government for approval. The estimated cost of the project will be determined during the preparation of the detailed proposal.
The new departments are expected to provide comprehensive treatment to burn patients who currently receive primary care at the RMLIMS emergency department before being referred to King George’s Medical University (KGMU) or Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital for further treatment. “The proposed facility will provide comprehensive and complete treatment to burn patients arriving at the emergency,” Singh said, Hindustan Times reported.
At present, KGMU has a dedicated plastic surgery department, while Civil Hospital operates a specialised burns unit.
The proposed facility will have a total of 70 beds across its burns ward, plastic surgery ward and ICU. A dedicated operation theatre will also be established to support surgical procedures.
To operate the new departments, RMLIMS plans to recruit 10 faculty members and 20 resident doctors, along with paramedical personnel and other healthcare staff.
According to Prof. Singh, the proposed staffing arrangements are intended to ensure round-the-clock specialised care for patients requiring intensive treatment for burn injuries.
The facility is expected to particularly benefit patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh, who currently have to travel to other government centres in Lucknow for specialised burns and plastic surgery treatment. However, RMLIMS receives patients from across the state, making the proposed facility significant for a large catchment population, officials said, reports Hindustan Times.
Once operational, the departments are expected to enable patients arriving at the RMLIMS emergency department with serious burns to receive treatment beyond initial stabilisation at the same institute, reducing the need for referrals to other hospitals.
The facility is also expected to strengthen access to reconstructive surgery, prolonged burn management and intensive care for patients with severe injuries.
