Two Pune hospitals pulled up by NGT for inappropriate biomedical waste disposal
Pune: Two hospitals in Sangli were issued notice by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Pune-based Western Zone bench for disposing biomedical wastewater into the local administration's drain, without its consent and without treating the waste.
The hospitals are known to be identified as Sevasadan Lifeline Hospital, Sangli and Mhetre Accident, and Multispecialty Hospital.
As per a media report in the Hindustan Times, the district collector, Abhijeet Chaudhury was directed to take action against the hospital by the tribunal and was asked to submit a report along with sending notices to the hospitals from NGT.
In its order, the court noted that the hospital is "running without valid consent from Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and discharging untreated wastewater/effluents into the municipal corporation drain."
Further, the tribunal instructed the district collector and a member of MPCB to form a committee and submit a visit-based factual and action taken report within six weeks of the order. MPCB is the nodal authority directed with providing logistical support, whereas the complainant has been asked to provide the required details to the committee, reports the HT.
The bench of judicial member Justice Sheo Kumar Singh and expert member Vijay Kulkarni issued the order on February 18 via video conference. The other respondents in the cases include Sangli, Miraj, Kupwad Municipal Corporation, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Central Pollution Control Board, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Surya Central Treatment Facility, and the Collector of Sangli district.
