New Delhi: Altogether, four hospitals from India have secured a place among the top 250 hospitals worldwide in the World's Best Hospitals 2026 ranking released by Newsweek in collaboration with global data firm Statista.

The four hospitals from India featured in the global top 250 are Medanta - The Medicity, Gurugram, which ranked 110 in the Newsweek list, All India Institute of Medical Sciences - Delhi, New Delhi, ranked 115 in the list, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, ranked 214 in the list, and Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC Vellore) - Town Campus, Vellore, ranked 245 in the list.

These hospitals were selected among more than 2,500 hospitals evaluated across 32 countries this year, with special recognition given to the top 250 institutions globally.

97 hospitals from India in World's Best Hospitals ranking:

Including these four hospitals, altogether, 97 hospitals from India have featured in the overall ‘World’s Best Hospitals 2026’ ranking.

In the statewise distribution, Maharashtra has the highest number with 17 hospitals, followed by Tamil Nadu with 14 hospitals and Karnataka with 13 hospitals. Delhi has 9 hospitals on the list, while Telangana has 7 hospitals featured in the ranking. Both Kerala and Gujarat have 6 hospitals each, and Uttar Pradesh has 4 hospitals included. Haryana and West Bengal have 3 hospitals each, while Rajasthan and Odisha have 2 hospitals each. The remaining states have one hospital each in the ranking.

The 2026 rankings evaluated 2,500+ hospitals across 32 countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

These countries were selected using multiple comparability criteria, including population size, life expectancy, standard of living, hospital density and the availability of reliable data.

Newsweek mentioned that each hospital was reviewed and given a score based on four data sources: recommendations from medical experts—including doctors, hospital managers and other health care professionals—hospital quality metrics, existing patient experience data and Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Implementation Survey. PROMs are standardised, validated questionnaires completed by patients to assess their perceptions of functional well-being and quality of life.

Specialty Recognition

Additionally, three hospitals received special recognition - Apollo Children's Hospital - Chennai – Pediatrics, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute – Cardiology and Tata Memorial Hospital – Oncology.

The lists are based on four data sources:

1. Hospital Quality Metrics: Quality metrics from a variety of public sources were collected for most countries. Quality metrics differ between countries. Examples of incorporated data include metrics on the quality of care for specific treatments, hygiene measures and the number of patients per doctor or nurse.

2. Hospital recommendations from peers: Newsweek and Statista invited tens of thousands of medical experts (doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals) in 32 countries to participate in an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals in their own country as well as in other countries. Recommendations for own employer/hospital were not allowed.

3. Patient Experience: Results from patient experience surveys were incorporated into the scoring model. Publicly available data from existing patient surveys was used to analyze patient experience. Patient surveys are typically conducted by insurance companies among patients after hospitalization. Examples of survey topics include general satisfaction with the hospital, recommendation of the hospital and satisfaction with medical care.

4. PROMs Implementation Survey: In the fall and winter of 2025 Newsweek and Statista reached out to hospitals and conducted a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs.
