FMGs Voice Concerns Over Dissolution of Delhi Medical Council, Urge Govt to Reconsider

New Delhi: Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in the national capital have raised serious concerns following the dissolution of the Delhi Medical Council (DMC), a move they say threatens the integrity of medical oversight in the city.
The All FMGs Association (AFA) has spoken out against the decision, highlighting the impact it may have on doctors’ regulation and public health systems, particularly at a time when many FMGs are awaiting their compulsory rotating medical internships.
In a strong statement, the AFA emphasized that dismantling the DMC could create chaos in healthcare regulation and leave both patients and practitioners exposed to uncertainty. Since its establishment in 1998, the DMC has played an essential role in maintaining ethical standards and ensuring quality in medical practice across Delhi, despite facing several administrative challenges over the years.
The association argued that instead of dismantling the council, efforts should be directed toward addressing its shortcomings and reinforcing its capacity. “Dissolving it risks chaos in medical oversight, leaving patients & doctors vulnerable. Since 1998, DMC has been a key player despite its struggles-fix those instead of scrapping it! The government’s dissolution plan overlooks DMC’s vital role. Strengthen it, don’t destroy it. Urging the LG to reconsider and preserve DMC for a safer, better-regulated medical future,” the association stated.
Criticizing the government’s move as short-sighted, the association urged the Lieutenant Governor (LG) to reconsider the decision and take steps to preserve and strengthen the DMC for the benefit of both the medical fraternity and public health. They asserted that abolishing the body undermines regulatory safeguards and disrupts an already burdened healthcare system.
Previously, Medical Dialogues reported that the proposal to dissolve the Delhi Medical Council, which Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh has already passed, is awaiting acceptance from the Lieutenant Governor's office. Meanwhile, the Health Department has tasked the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to oversee the functions of the Council until a new body is formed. The Delhi Medical Council is an autonomous statutory body enacted under the Delhi Medical Council Act 1997 to regulate the practice of the modern system of medicine in Delhi. DMC also ensures that private doctors in the city are following ethical practices.
