Ahmedabad MBBS student missing in Georgia found dead in river, probe underway

Ahmedabad: The MBBS student from Ahmedabad studying at Caucasus International University in Georgia, who had been missing for two weeks, had been found dead in the Mtkvari River.

Medical Dialogues reported on May 25 that the student had been missing since May 14 under mysterious circumstances following a dispute with his Indian landlord in Tbilisi.

Confirming the development to Civil Georgia, a local Tbilisi-based news portal, the police said that they found his body in the river. Along with this, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia also confirmed this to the Interpressnews online news agency.

The police have registered a case under Article 115, which relates to "incitement to suicide." The media stated that this is a standard legal procedure followed in Georgia when a person is found dead under similar circumstances.

The university had earlier stated on May 27 after reports of his disappearance surfaced in the Indian media. According to the institution, he was last seen on May 14 at around 3:30 pm near the Caucasus Medical Centre in the Saburtalo district of Tbilisi.

According to his family, the student allegedly faced severe mental harassment from his landlord and certain other individuals. He was supposed to board a flight back to Ahmedabad, but remained untraceable since May 14.

The missing student hails from Ahmedabad's Viratnagar area. He had initially gone to Ukraine to pursue medical studies. However, after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, he returned to India and later shifted to Georgia nearly four years ago to continue his medical education. He was studying MBBS and was in the ninth semester at Caucasus International University.

His family said the student last spoke to his parents on May 14. During the conversation, he allegedly informed them that he was being mentally harassed and threatened by the landlord and certain individuals associated with the rented accommodation where he had been staying. Following the alleged harassment, he moved to another flat.

The family claimed that he had shifted part of his belongings to the new accommodation and planned to return to Ahmedabad after the situation worsened. They alleged that the landlord, his girlfriend and another person threatened their son with death and pressured him to pay money.
