Maharashtra govt accepts MBBS Interns' demand for stipend hike, monthly pay to rise from 18k to Rs 25k

Mumbai: In a latest development, the Maharashtra Government has accepted the demand for a stipend hike for MBBS intern doctors, which would increase their monthly stipend from Rs 18,000 to Rs 25,000.
The decision is expected to bring relief to interns who had been holding peaceful protests against the low stipend with the support of the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI).
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the medicos associated with ASMI had warned of launching a statewide strike if the Government failed to provide a satisfactory response to their demands by November 1, 2026. The demands of the association are an increase in the monthly stipend from Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000, a 3% annual increment, and fair compensation by taking into account the rising costs of food, accommodation, travel, and other essential expenses.

MBBS interns in Maharashtra, who have completed their MBBS degree and are currently undergoing Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) in government and affiliated medical colleges across Maharashtra, have been raising concerns over the current stipend for the past two months, citing the rising cost of living, accommodation, transportation, food, and other daily expenses.
As per an Instagram post shared by the association, its representatives were called for a meeting held on November 5, 2026, at Mantralaya in Mumbai to discuss the proposed stipend revision for MBBS interns. The meeting was convened by the Maharashtra Medical Education Department in the presence of the State Medical Education Minister.
Following the meeting, the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI) informed interns that their demand for an increase in the monthly stipend had been accepted. However, the official Government Resolution (GR) is expected to take around one to one-and-a-half months to be issued due to government procedures.
The association described the development as a major achievement for ASMI and the interns who had collectively raised the demand for a stipend hike. It also urged interns to continue supporting each other until the official GR is released.
"Guys, the meeting has successfully concluded, and our demand for a stipend hike has been accepted! The revised stipend will be ₹25,000 per month. The official GR is expected to take around 1–1.5 months due to government procedures. This is a big achievement for ASMI (Association of State Medical Interns) and every intern who stood united in this fight. Let’s continue supporting each other until the official GR is released. Together we fought, together we achieved," ASMI said in an Instagram post.
