2 Rajasthan medical students jailed in Kazakhstan after intervening in New year party fight

Rajasthan: Two MBBS students from Rajasthan have been jailed in Kazakhstan after trying to break up a fight during a New Year's Eve party on December 31, 2024.
The students were at a New Year's party when a fight broke out between two other students. When they tried to intervene, they got into trouble and have now spent 13 months in jail.
One of the students enrolled at Caspian Medical University in Kazakhstan in 2021, and another enrolled in 2022.
According to Bhaskar report, on December 31, 2024, during a party, a fight broke out between two other students and the concerned medicos tried to intervene.
On January 1, 2025, one of the students who was involved in the fight filed a complaint with the police, but later withdrew it. A written agreement and apology were also submitted to the police and the court. The court accepted it. All the students collectively compensated the restaurant for the damages.
The court acknowledged that a settlement had been reached between both parties, and compensation had been paid for the damage caused to the restaurant. No Kazakh citizens were injured.
None of the students has a criminal record. No weapons were recovered either, as confirmed in the police investigation. Despite this, the families allege that only the students who were trying to break the fight were sent to jail. The court sentenced both of them to six and a half years in prison.
The families say the fight was resolved the next day, but their sons are still in jail.
According to the BhaskarEnglish Media news report, the families have contacted the Rajasthan Association of North America (RANA) for assistance, an organisation of Rajasthan's expatriates that helps migrants. RANA President Prem Bhandari has promised to support them. He received calls from the families of both children.
