Chennai: As a result of the National Medical Commission's (NMC) granting an early deadline for medical and dental admission this year due to pandemic and several other admission policies of the state, as many as 117 MBBS and 459 BDS seats are lying vacant in the medical and dental institutes of Tamil Nadu.

The state selection committee has already informed that it will not be able to fill up these vacant seats as the deadline set by NMC for the medical and dental admission process has already ended on January 15.

As per the recent media report by Times of India, even after 2 rounds of counselling, five MBBS seats in government medical colleges and 112 seats in self-financing medical institutions are still lying vacant in the state. However, it is not due to the existence of less qualified students but due to some complications in admission deadline and procedure.
According to the daily, apart from MBBS seats, 12 BDS seats in government medical colleges and 447 management seats in self-financing colleges are also vacant still now but the committee will not be able to fill it as well. In the second round of counselling, students are given the choice to upgrade their seats and seek admission in a college of their choice which was not offered to them during the first counselling. But the state selection committee has informed that they could not allot the vacant seats, particularly in government colleges, that is created by giving other students the option to 'upgrade'.
Taking cognizance of the disadvantage that the medical aspirants will have to the fact due to the early deadline for admission procedure, the Directorate of Medical Education has now moved the Supreme Court and sought additional time to conduct the mop-up counselling. The Director of Medical Education, Dr R Narayanababu told TOI, "At least 23,000 students had applied for government quota seats and more than 14,000 students had applied for management quota seats. A week-long mop up will give others a chance."
One seat each was available in government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital and Government Vellore Medical college hospital and three at Rajah Muthiah Medical College are still vacant even after the completion of the second round of counselling on January 15th, reports the daily.
" All seats in colleges were taken in the first round. During the second round, a student allotted a seat in Kilpauk Medical College, opted for Christian Medical College. We can't allot the vacant seat to the next student without giving "upgrade option" to all students below his rank," said selection committee secretary Dr G Selvarajan.
The council did not have the time to fill the lapsed 112 NRI seats or almost 460 BDS seats. The official counselling process got slower than usual as the officials were following all the standard norms and protocols and were ensuring preventive measures against the pandemic.
