NMC conducts virtual inspection of 4 TN Medical Colleges

Such a confirmation has come from the Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian, who has informed the TOI that he would be requesting the Central Government for giving permission to admit students in all the 11 new medical colleges of the State.

Already the Directorate of Medical Education has submitted a compliance report to the authorities and has sought an increase in the MBBS seats in four of the already approves medical colleges. If the Central Government permits, apart from the already approved 850 MBBS seats, at least 600 additional MBBS seats would be included to the State.

This comes after the Centre's approval for 850 MBBS seats in 7 medical colleges of the State. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that after an inspection from the NMC, the Central Government has recently approved 850 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu from this academic year itself. These additional seats are set to be added in seven out of eleven new medical colleges.

Newly established medical colleges in Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi, and Ooty have received the nod from Union Government to admit 150 MBBS students each. Apart from these, the medical colleges in Namakkal, Tiruvallur, Tirupur, and Ramanathapuram have been granted to fill 100 MBBS seats in each of these colleges.

Following inspection report by the NMC team, the Centre had also asked the State Government to upgrade the infrastructure, mostly civil works, in several medical colleges.

The Health Minister of the State, in response, had earlier confirmed that all the minor deficiencies in the Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur and Tiruvallur medical colleges have been rectified and after submitting the reports to the Union Government officials, the Director of Medical Education would soon request for additional MBBS seats in the remaining 4 medical colleges.

In fact, the State had sought nod for an additional 800 MBBS seats which includes 600 MBBS seats in four new medical colleges in Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Dindigul, and Krishnagiri. Further, requests had been made for increasing the intake capacity in already approved medical colleges at Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Tiruppur, and Thiruvallur by 50 seats each.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the State has already upgraded the civil work and submitted a compliance report for re-inspection and based on it, the NMC team conducted a virtual inspection. Speaking about the matter, the State Health Minister told the daily, "We upgraded civil work and submitted a compliance report for reinspection. Based on our submission, a virtual inspection was done."

"We have also applied to additional 50 seats in Namakkal, Tirupur, Tiruvallur and Ramanathapuram. We are hopeful of getting all the 1650 seats in all eleven colleges," he added.

"We have been told the inspection committee is satisfied with our compliance. I will be visiting Delhi with senior officials on Wednesday. We will request the Centre to give us permission to admit students to all 11 new medical colleges from the current academic year," Subramanian further told the daily.

Currently, the State has a total number of 52 medical colleges, out of which 26 are run by the Government. So, there are a total number of 3650 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu that belong to the Government medical colleges, revealed the data presented by MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar. Now, with the state getting permission for 850 more MBBS seats, the total number of Government MBBS seats in the seats stand at 4,300. If in reality the State gets permission for another 800 seats, then the number of government medial seats in Tamil Nadu would cross the 5000 benchmark.
