NTRUHS announces Rs 30k stipend to boost student research
Andhra Pradesh: Dr P Chandrasekhar, Vice-Chancellor of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), recently stated that special funds are being allocated to promote research and sports in the government medical colleges of Andhra Pradesh.
These initiatives are being undertaken to enhance the standards of medical education.
Therefore, each GMC will receive an annual grant of ₹10 lakh to improve infrastructure and to organise inter-university, state, or national tournaments.
To promote research among students, the university will provide a stipend of ₹30,000 to at least 1,000 students annually (₹5,000 per month for six months). Currently, only 500 undergraduate medical students receive ₹10,000.
"To encourage research among students, the university will provide ₹30,000 stipend (₹5,000 per month for six months) to at least 1,000 students every year," the V-C announced, quotes The Hindu.
Over the next three years, 3,000 students will participate in short-term research projects. He explained that this initiative will include students from Allopathy, AYUSH, paramedical, and other medical disciplines; he further added that, based on the significance of the research, the grant amount has been increased from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh per individual.
In addition, a 'Faculty Research Grant' has also been sanctioned for 200 faculty members working in affiliated colleges. They will be provided with financial assistance ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh.
Apart from this, Dr NTRUHS will establish a Disease Surveillance and Decision Support Centre (DMDC) within its campus under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), report The Hindu.
This centre will institutionalise advanced predictive modelling and scenario simulation. It designates the DMDC as a state-level technical institute under the administrative control of the Department of Health, Medical, and Family Welfare, with an estimated expenditure of ₹5.73 crore.
Additionally, it provides for the creation of 13 posts, comprising technical, analytical, and program management roles. Also, it designates Dr NTRUHS as the nodal academic host institution.
Furthermore, a request has been made to allocate approximately 25 acres of land for the university in Amravati, and the Capital Region Development Authority is considering it.
Meanwhile, the university is also planning to enter into an agreement with Singapore's National University of Health, the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.
