NMC nod to new MD Courses at Goa Medical College

Panaji: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants in Goa, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for new MD courses at Goa Medical College.

Doctors of Medicine (MD) courses in Geriatric medicine & immunology, haematology, and blood transfusion will be available at GMC from the academic year 2023-2024.

This information was shared by the Health Minister of the State Vishwajit Rane who announced on Thursday about the NMC nod for these new teaching courses.

Speaking about this, he added, “It is a landmark achievement in the academic history of GMC. The new MD courses are available in a few medical colleges.”

One of the oldest medical institutes in the country, Goa Medical College (GMC) was established back in 1691. It is run by the government and an organic institute of the Goa University. The college has 180 MBBS seats available for admission and apart from this, it also offers 86 PG medical seats for PG medical aspirants.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, now the college is all set to start new MD courses geriatric medicine & immunology, haematology, and blood transfusion.

While commenting on the matter, a senior doctor of GMC pointed out that over the last five years, the activities at the college have expanded in a big way- both in terms of academics and infrastructure.

Within the next few months, the super-specialty block is expected to be fully commissioned and the construction of the regional cancer centre is also scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023 or by early 2024, the doctor informed.

“With the GMC offering so many super-specialty courses, Goan students no longer will require to go outside the state for their advanced studies,” he mentioned while adding that GMC is being counted as one of the best medical colleges in the country.'

Medical Dialogues had last year repprted that the college has been granted with NMC nod for 10 new super-specialty seats in six departments including cardiothoracic surgery, urology, plastic surgery, cardiology, cardiac anesthesia and nephrology.
